Shelf-Life & Product Troubleshooting

Trace product defects to their process, packaging or storage causes.

Two masked laboratory technicians examining a sample and a printed chart together, with a measuring cylinder, flasks and bottles of milk on the bench in front of them.

PrimeTech supports client teams before, during and after implementation. Our goal is to transfer practical knowledge, solve root causes and help improvements remain effective over time.

Where we help

Short shelf life, spoilage, sedimentation, phase separation, syneresis, texture faults, off-flavors, thermal damage and cold-chain deviations.

Typical scope

Review microbiology and trend data; examine raw materials, heat treatment, filling hygiene, package integrity and storage; design controlled trials; investigate yeasts, molds and heat-resistant organisms where applicable; define and verify corrective actions.

What you receive

An evidence-based fault tree, testing plan, documented findings and corrective-action verification criteria.

Coverage areas

  • Production & Product Technology
  • Quality & Food Safety

Detailed scope

  1. Product defect diagnosis

Investigate short shelf life, spoilage, sedimentation, phase separation, syneresis, poor texture, off-flavor, burnt notes and color instability.

  2. Microbiological sources

Assess raw milk, spores and heat-resistant organisms, yeasts, molds, environmental sources, equipment hygiene and post-process contamination.

  3. Process and packaging

Review heat-treatment evidence, cooling, CIP, aseptic or hygienic filling, pack integrity, storage and cold-chain conditions.

  4. Controlled investigation

Use sampling, laboratory results, process trends and targeted trials to test likely causes before changing recipes or operating settings.

  5. Corrective action

Define process, hygiene, packaging or handling changes; verify the result through relevant product testing and shelf-life studies. Any extension is measured, not promised in advance.

  6. Shelf-life study design

Select storage conditions, time points, sample size, microbiological and physicochemical tests, sensory criteria and packaging checks relevant to the intended distribution chain.

  7. Complaint and returns analysis

Compare lot history, process trends, laboratory results, packaging integrity and market handling to identify recurring patterns and isolate the affected scope.

  8. High-risk interfaces

Examine post-pasteurization transfer, valves, fillers, seals, air exposure, personnel intervention and cold-chain breaks as potential sources of recontamination.

  9. Verification and prevention

Document root-cause confidence, corrective actions, verification batches, monitoring limits and triggers for escalation when evidence remains inconclusive.
